Chairperson’s Message

Technology is rapidly transforming the ways in which information is created, accessed and shared. Libraries and other documentation centres such as archives, museums, and information centres are no longer limited to physical collections but are becoming dynamic hubs of digital resources, online databases and knowledge networks. With advancements in artificial intelligence, data analytics, digital preservation and open access platforms, the field of library and information science is moving toward new modes of service, research and community engagement.
The Centre for Library and Information Management Studies (CLIMS) invites aspiring information professionals to join its esteemed Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc) and PG Diploma in Digital Library and Information Management (PGDLIM) programmes, which are designed to shape a globally competitive and socially responsible workforce for the knowledge economy.
The widespread integration of digital technology has profoundly reshaped India's higher education landscape, positioning librarians as vital facilitators of digital learning. Recognizing this paradigm shift and the escalating demand for skilled professionals, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) established the CLIMS in 2012. Since then, CLIMS has been a pioneering force in the training and capacity building of library and information professionals.
In line with its academic mission, CLIMS offers specialized programmes including PGDLIM, MLISc and PhD. The MLISc programme, launched in 2013, specifically addresses the need for a competent workforce capable of navigating the complexities of the digital age and bridging the digital divide. This programme offers a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum that extends beyond traditional library science. Students receive advanced training in emerging areas such as:
- Modern Library Administration
- Classification and Ontology
- Cataloguing and Metadata
- Digital Libraries and Content Management
- Web-Based Information Services
- Knowledge Management
- Research and Data Management
- Digital Humanities
- Digital Scholarship
- Application of Artificial Intelligence
This holistic approach equips our students with a strong foundation in research, analysis and practical application.
Similarly, the PGDLIM programme provides specialized knowledge in managing digital resources, preparing professionals for the growing field of digital information management. Both programs ensure our graduates are prepared to excel in diverse sectors, including academic and research institutions, corporate libraries, information centers, publishing houses, non-governmental organizations, public libraries, archives, documentation centres, etc. Our graduates emerge as valuable assets and ready to make significant contributions to any organization they join.
We invite you to consider joining these programmes and becoming part of the next generation of information professionals dedicated to excellence and social impact.
With best wishes,
Dr. J. Shivarama
